Courtroom Ettiquette: A Client's Guide

Your appearance and behavior are non-verbal testimony. Here is how to make the right impression.

Dress for the Results You Want

Your attire shows the Judge that you respect the legal process.

Recommended

Men: Suit and tie, or a tucked-in collared shirt with dress slacks and a belt.

Women: Business suit, knee-length dress, or dress slacks with a conservative blouse.

Footwear: Clean dress shoes or professional flats.

Avoid

No jeans with holes, leggings, or sweatpants.

No tank tops, crop tops, or "graphic" t-shirts.

No flip-flops, work boots, or tattered sneakers.

Important: All hats must be removed before entering the courtroom.

Pro-Tip from Niklas: The judge begins evaluating you the moment you walk through the courtroom doors. Dressing respectfully shows the court that you take the proceedings—and their authority—seriously.
